PROJECT 1: LIGHTING AND ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE EVALUATION AND DESIGN
Introduction
For this project, we were exposed to the technical aspects of building design involved with active lighting and acoustic treatment for internal spaces through conducting a case study. Lighting evaluation included daylighting considerations and standard lighting requirements for a specific space. Acoustic evaluation included the control of sound in internal spaces, preserving and enhancing desirable sounds, and eliminating undesirable ones based on requirements provided.

Objectives Met

Through this project, I have gained further understanding in:
-
Daylighting, lighting and acoustic characteristics and requirements in a suggested space.
-
Characteristics and function of daylighting & artificial lighting and sound & acoustics within the intended space.
-
Spatial analysis regarding lighting and acoustics of a space.

Learning Outcomes
Through this project, I have developed the ability to:
-
Produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirements and analyse factors which effects the lighting design of a space.
-
Explore and apply understanding of building physics and building materials on existing building projects.
-
Evaluate and explore the improvisation by using current material and technology in relevance to present construction industry.
-
Understand and analyse lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations.
-
Understand and analyse acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations.

Submission Requirements
In groups of 6-7, we were required to perform an appraisal of daylighting artificial lighting, noise and sound condition of a selected case study. From this study, we were to produce;
-
A4 bound report
-
2 A2 panels summarizing the results of the case study.

Reflection
Through this project, I have been given the opportunity to practically apply the knowledge I have gained through lectures, and have been able to directly relate the information gained and use them to solve real life problems. Having gone through this experience, I am now more confident and familiar with their application in future projects, whether it may be in studio or for the working world.
PROJECT 2 : INTEGRATION PROJECT
Introduction
For this project, we were required to integrate our understanding on the principles of lighting and acoustic design, which include advanced daylighting, artificial lighting, noise management and room acoustics into our building designs for Studio 5.

Project Objectives
Through this project, I become able to:
-
Understand lighting and acoustic design principles relating to my Studio 5 design.
-
Solve design problems relating to sustainability
-
Design spacesthat incorporate lighting and acoustics based on provided standards.

Learning Outcomes
Through this project, I have developed the ability to:
-
Produce site analysis which documents, interprets and analyzes the site context in relation to lighting and acoustics.
-
Identify and analyze functional needs through case studies to inform of lighting and acoustics.

Submission Requirements

Individually, we were required to incorporate lighting and acoustic considerations into our building that include;
-
Daylighting
-
Artificial Lighting
-
PSALI
-
Reverberation Time
-
Transmission Loss
-
External Noise
So as to meet standard requirements provided by MS1525.

We were to produce;
-
2 A2 boards, one each for lighting and acoustic
-
A4 bound report for all related calculations

Reflection
Through this project, I was able to effectively apply knowledge gained into my Studio 5 design. This application allowed me to realize that tecnhical considerations are indeed very important and had to be taken into account early in the design phase, as I encountered several problems that required design changes to accomodate adequate lighting and acoustics while I was performing the necessary calculations for this project. WIth this realization while learning on the fly, I am now more prepared and enlightened going into future projects on the matter of acoustic and lighting considerations.
