Studio 6 (Architectural Design Project, ADP)

PROJECT 1A: DEVELOPING AN ARCHITECTURAL POSITION

Introduction

For this project, in addition to typical site analysis, we were required to produce a project brief emphasizing on: (1) the broad theme of sustaining humanities and (2) resolution of architectural design with a main theme of discovering and establishing Malaysian identity in the contemporary architectural design.

We were required to further develop the proposed design project by their supervisor that reflects the theme and finalize a programme that addresses the needs of the required user group, as well as provide spaces that invites interaction with the surrounding contextual
conditions. In addition to the theme of sustaining humanities, the module focuses on the development of students’ ability to integrate considerations of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design.

Objectives Met

Through this project, I have gained further understanding in:

  • Developing a simple brief for an architectural design project.

  • Conducting pre-design analysis to inform the design project.

Learning Outcomes

Through this project, I have developed the ability to:

  • Formulate a simple brief that include appropriate architectural programme and planning within a selected architectural context

  • Analyse case studies to gain understanding of architectural responses and strategiesof an intentional design strategy to inform the design project

  • Conduct contextual and user analysis in the pre-design phase

Submission Requirements

In our own studio groups, we were required to conduct;

  1. Studies of the contextual conditions of the site

  2. Studies on selected user groups and building types

  3. Studies on precedents that inform the ideas/approach/strategies underlying the design project

Based on the pre-design phase we were to develop a simple design brief that includes:

  1. Reviewing building code and local or city ordinance,

  2. Initiative on establishing design parameters,

  3. Take initiative consider and study solar analysis and other site specific analysis,

  4. Research on precedents or do actual visitation to projects related and directly relevant to the proposal

  5. Research on demography and user profile

There are several guidelines that provide the scope of your proposed project as follows:

  • 3-5 stories/levels

  • 1800-2000 sq.mts. built up area (gross floor area)

  • Parking lot (based on Uniform Building By-Laws and Local requirements).

  • Compliance with city planning or local guidelines and requirements.

  • Shall incorporate the project theme ‘Sustaining Humanities’ and architectural design theme ‘Discovering Malaysian architectural identity in the contemporary designs’.

Reflection

Through this project, I have come to better understand the assigned site of Putrajaya, its people and history, its current condition and how it would change in the future. Armed with this knowledege, we then proposed a Social Enterprise in order to revitalize the city by introducing cultural diversity. I am thus able to proceed in an enlightened manner to the design stage of the project. Through exploring numerous precedent studies, I have gained further knowledge into the nature and strategies adopted in the construction of social enterprise centres and their response to the context and its people. I have also gained insight into the role of social enterprises in the society to be applied in the design.

PROJECT 1B : DESIGN STRATEGY PROPOSAL

Introduction

For this phase, we were to take the information gathered to create several design options for consideration. These ideas were to be further analysed and developed through sketching, diagramming and production of study models in order to visualize different routes and approaches to the project.

Submission Requirements

Individually, we were required to refine and produce a formal architectural design strategy in response to our proposed project.

The design must;

  • Explore and express architectural position and synthesize issues relating to program, user, site and other regulatory requirements

  • Consider expanded aspects of design development in tandem with the design of spaces, e.g.regulatory requirements, fire safety, materials, construction/buildability, sustainability, feasibility and other relevant considerations, wherever possible, integrating our development to produce a richer, more multi-layered design.

  • Adhere to the architectural design theme: ‘Discovering and incorporating Malaysian art, culture and tradition in Contemporary Architecture’

All findings would be pinned up and presented.

Reflection

Through this phase, I was able to obtain an outsider's perspective on my design development, and be able to explore further in a more specific direction, both conceptually and in the execution of the design. The aspects of fire safety and sustainability were also evaluated, to ensure the buildability of the design.

PROJECT 1C : DETAILED DESIGN AND REPORT

Introduction

For this phase, we were to produce our final design according to the proposed brief, ensuring the sustainability and buildability of the building while adhering to the theme of Sustaining Humanities.

Submission Requirements

Individually, we were required to produce 6-10 A1 presentation panels and a physical model of at least 1:200 scale for presentation.

We were also required to produce a detailed design report indicating every aspect of the design, from conceptual and programmatic development to technological considerations.

Reflection

Through this phase, I was able to produce what I consider to be a well rounded and complete design, taking into consideration concept, contextual response, climatic responses, massing strategies, social impact, political concerns, legal requirements and guidelines, fire safety, sustainability, both active and passive strategies, technological applications, and also the design details, structural details and overall buildability of the building into account. I feel as if I have created something possible and real, instead of something that is in the realm of fantasy. I was able to test myself and apply all that I had learned throughout the 6 semesters of my study. Through this project, I am now able to proceed by applying all the knowledge I have learned in the next phase of my studies.
