Building Technology 1
PROJECT 1: INDUSTRIALISED BUILDING SYSTEM
Introduction
For this project, we were exposed to the Industrialised Building System (IBS) as well as the embodied energy of materials. We were first exposed with different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials. We had to design a 3-storey apartment block using mainly IBS components, in which a physical model of the building would be constructed to imitate the actual IBS construction process and all the processes were to be recorded in a video.

Objectives Met

Through this project, I have gained further understanding in:
-
Different types of IBS construction method.
-
The application of appropriate IBS construction method in the production of a model for an apartment building.
-
IBS construction process through model making.
-
Matters related to energy efficiency and ecological impact.
-
Communication skills among group members through proper delegation of works and production of the video.

Learning Outcomes
Through this project, I have developed the ability to:
-
Identify and collect relevant research data.
-
Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.
-
Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction.
-
Analyse and document construction methods and materials.
-
Critique issues pertaining to energy efficiency, embodied energy as well as ecological impact.

Submission Requirements
In groups of 6-7, we were required to perform a study on a building preferably an apartment, which was constructed fully or partially using IBS method and identify all the IBS components used including appropriate size.
We were then required to design an apartment unit within 100m2 that incorporates the IBS system, either fully or partially. Then we were to construct a physical model of the designed apartment in 3 levels, including foundation and roof detail. All the process including fabrication of components and sequence of construction in the production of the model would be documented in a video. A number of blow-up connection details of different parts of the model should also be produced.

The submission format is as follows;
-
A 1:40 physical model of designed apartment
-
3 larger blow-up details of joints
-
A video detailing construction sequences and model production.

Reflection
Through this project, I have been exposed to the IBS system in Malaysia and come to know of the components and joining details of the prefabricated components. I have also realized the effectivity of such a system and through preliminary studies, see the convenience of the IBS system and how it is being applied in real life projects. Armed with this knowledege, I am able to apply it in further design projects or in the working world.
PROJECT 2 : CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS
Introduction
For this project, we were required to integrate our understanding on technical studies into our Studio 5 design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages students to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were unbuildable. This assignment was design with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase the technical competency of students.

Project Objectives
Through this project, I gained better understanding in:
-
Analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of building technology in my Studio 5 design.
-
The construction aspects throughout the design process.
-
Adapting and implementing alternative construction systems into my Studio 5 design.

Learning Outcomes
Through this project, I have developed the ability to:
-
Analyse and document construction methods and materials
-
Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.
-
Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing.
-
Generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.

Submission Requirements

Individually, we were required to carry out 2 tasks;
TASK A: PRECEDENT STUDIES
Conduct some precedent studies of recent, complex or unique construction systems that could be applied in the design;
-
Roof system
-
Structural system
-
Flooring system
-
Facade system
-
Production of 2 facade systems of our Studio 5 design based on precedent studies

TASK B: SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVES
To develop practical construction solutions and detailing for our design through the production of sectional perspective drawings of spaces. We were required to produce detail sectional perspective drawing of TWO interesting spaces.
-
Top floor - roof connection
-
Ground floor - foundation connection

We were compile all our findings, renders and drawings into an A3 bound report.

Reflection
Through this project, I was able to effectively apply knowledge gained into my Studio 5 design. This application allowed me to realize that tecnhical considerations are indeed very important and had to be taken into account early in the design phase. WIth this realization while learning on the fly, I am now more prepared and enlightened going into future projects on the matter of structural, roof and facade design.
